The head-to-head favours Portugal historically — seven wins in the last ten meetings, most recently a 1-1 draw in the 2024 Nations League — but knockout football rarely respects a decade of friendlies and qualifiers.

When a favourite drifts and the underdog is backed into a game this evenly matched on form, the market is telling you it expects a tight one.
Where the Value Sits
The honest read: Portugal at 1.77-1.80 is a fair price on paper, but the drift and the opposing money make it a poor standalone lay.
- Under 2.5 goals is my lead lean. Two experienced, cautious sides, a heat warning nudging the tempo down, and knockout stakes — the ingredients point to a low-scoring, managed game.
- Croatia double chance (draw or win) at around 1.70 is the value side. Modrić and Kovačić can strangle the midfield, and the overnight money agrees.
- Ronaldo anytime scorer is the heart-over-head play, and the Golden Boot market prices him as an outsider — as long as 61.00 at one book, shorter (around 23.00) elsewhere. Small-stake territory only, but on a farewell night the volume of set-pieces will run through him.
I would avoid laying Portugal straight at the current number. This has draw-or-cagey written all over it.

Whoever comes through this meets the winner of Spain vs Austria in the Round of 16 on July 6. For Portugal, that is a plausible path deeper into the tournament; for Croatia, it is the kind of open half of the bracket that makes a veteran side dream.
