Portugal vs Croatia — 7:00 PM ET (R32, BMO Field, Toronto)
The pick of the day for neutrals and the one Torontonians can walk to. Portugal are a slight favourite at 1.77-1.80 (around −130 to −125), the draw 3.40-3.65, Croatia 4.70-5.00 (+370 to +400). But the market is moving one way: Croatia have shortened by roughly 45% overnight as money came in, while Portugal drifted on the outright and to-advance boards. That is a live tell.
The form lines are close. Portugal came second in Group K on five points (1-1 DR Congo, 5-0 Uzbekistan, 0-0 Colombia), Cristiano Ronaldo leading a front line with Neto and Bruno Fernandes. Croatia finished second in Group L on six points (2-4 England, 1-0 Panama, 2-1 Paraguay), with Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić controlling midfield and Joško Gvardiol anchoring the back. The head-to-head is lopsided historically — Portugal have won seven of the last ten meetings, the most recent a 1-1 draw — but this is one game between two experienced, cagey sides. A heat warning is in force in Toronto with around a 40% chance of showers near kickoff, which nudges me further toward a controlled, low-tempo game.
Pick: Under 2.5 goals, with Croatia double chance (draw or win) at around 1.70 as the value alternative if you want a side. The overnight money on Croatia and Portugal’s drift both point the same direction.
Switzerland vs Algeria — 11:00 PM ET (R32, BC Place, Vancouver)
A late one for the East but prime time on the West Coast (8:00 PM PT), and it is a fascinating first-ever competitive meeting. Switzerland are favourites at 2.02 (+102), the draw 3.10 (+210), Algeria 3.94 (+294). The Swiss won Group B outright on seven points — the same side that beat Canada 2-1 in the group decider — with Johan Manzambi (three goals, one assist) catching the eye and Granit Xhaka running midfield. Switzerland come in fully fit.
Algeria arrive as a third-placed qualifier after a wild 3-3 with Austria, and there is a subplot: their coach, Vladimir Petković, managed Switzerland for seven years before Murat Yakin took over, so he knows exactly what he is trying to knock out. The concern for the Algeria side of a bet is up front — Mohamed El Amine Amoura is a serious doubt with a thigh problem, which thins their most direct route to goal. Add a rainy Vancouver forecast (around 12-16°C, showers) at a stadium treated as effectively open-air, and I lean to the fitter, more settled team.
Pick of the day: Switzerland to win, or Switzerland draw-no-bet at a shade over even money if you want the insurance. Amoura’s fitness is the swing factor and it points the Swiss way.
