Argentina beat England 2–1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to reach a second straight final — the first nation to contest consecutive World Cup finals since Brazil in 1962. England were left with the third-place play-off, where, as it turned out, they would produce the game of the tournament.
Third Place — England 6, France 4
Ten goals. A 4–0 half-time lead. A hat-trick and a scoring record. The bronze match at Hard Rock Stadium was the most prolific World Cup match since 1982. England raced clear through Declan Rice (3′), Ezri Konsa (18′) and a first-half brace from Bukayo Saka (37′, 45+1′), then Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot (87′). France’s second-half fightback — Mbappé (48′), Rachid Barcola (54′), Mbappé again (66′) and Ousmane Dembélé (90+6′) — made it respectable before Jude Bellingham sealed it (90+8′).
Two milestones stand out. Saka is only the second England player ever to score a knockout-stage World Cup hat-trick, after Geoff Hurst in the 1966 final. And England’s third-place finish is their best men’s World Cup result since they won it in 1966. France finish fourth.
