Messi has been the tournament’s outstanding attacker — eight goals, a hat-trick on opening day, and a scorer’s touch in every match — and the 3-2 win over Egypt (however contested by the Egyptians, who lodged a formal FIFA complaint) showed the holders can win ugly. Switzerland are the story on the other side: their first quarter-final since 1954, and their first World Cup with two knockout wins, after edging Colombia 4-3 on penalties in Vancouver, with keeper Gregor Kobel saving the decisive spot-kick. This is the seasoned favourite against a defensively excellent side chasing history.
Team News — Fitness and the Yellow-Card Trap
Argentina. No injuries or suspensions of note — a clean bill of health. The one thing to watch is a booking trap: Gonzalo Montiel is the only Argentine carrying a yellow card into the quarter-final, so a card here rules him out of the semi. That is a squad-management footnote, not a team-news worry.
Switzerland. Johan Manzambi is a doubt (a non-contact knee injury in training before the Colombia game); an MRI ruled out anything serious and he "may return" for the quarter-final. Granit Xhaka, Fabian Rieder-type midfield runners and the Kobel-led defence are otherwise intact. Note that Xhaka, Zakaria and Muheim are each one booking from a semi-final suspension — a factor if Switzerland somehow get there.
Form and Head-to-Head
Argentina are unbeaten across five, with wins over Algeria, Austria and Jordan in the group, then 3-2 over Cape Verde and 3-2 over Egypt — 14 goals scored, but conceding in each of the last three, which is the crack Switzerland will target. The Swiss are unbeaten too (Bosnia 4-1, Canada 2-1, Algeria 2-0, then the goalless Colombia tie won on penalties) with just three goals conceded all tournament — the meanest defence in the bottom half. The head-to-head is one-way: seven meetings since 1966, five Argentina wins, two draws, no Swiss win; the last was the 2014 Round of 16, Argentina 1-0 on a 118th-minute Di María goal. Switzerland have taken Argentina to the wire before but never beaten them.

The honest read: Argentina should win, but a Swiss defence this stubborn plus Argentina’s habit of conceding makes the goals and handicap markets more interesting than laying a short favourite.
- Under 2.5 goals is my lead lean. Switzerland have conceded three all tournament and will happily slow the game; a wet, late-night surface reinforces it. This has 1-0 or 2-1 Argentina, or a shootout, written on it.
- Messi anytime scorer is the on-form play — he has scored in every match and leads the Golden Boot market at 2.20. The cleanest single-player angle on the whole card.
- Switzerland double chance at around 2.10 is the value side if you want the underdog — extra time is a real outcome given how they took Colombia the distance.
I would keep Argentina moneyline stakes modest at 1.71-1.80 and lean into the goals and scorer markets instead.
